In 1953 father/son team, Ralph and Neil Skutt, manufactured the industry's first multi-sided hobby kiln in Olympia, Washington under the name "Skutt & Sons".

The introduction of this new lightweight design revolutionized, not just the ceramic kiln business but the whole ceramic industry by bringing ceramics to the home.

A lot has changed over the last 40 + years. Kiln companies have come and gone, new clay bodies and glazes are constantly being developed that demand greater firing precision, and automatic controllers are quickly replacing the once cutting edge KilnSitter.

Skutt Production Kilns

The Skutt Production Kiln (PK) line was designed to handle the rig or ous demands of high-volume ceramic manufacturers and high-fi re art ists. In pro duc tion, time is money. PK kilns are designed to save you both.

Everything about the PK line is geared towards increasing overall performance and decreasing production time, maintenance cost and downtime. The elements in all PK kilns are balanced on 3 different levels of the kiln in order to place the heat where it is needed most. The mercury relays and heavy gauge high temperature feeder wire should never need replacing, the busbar design makes changing elements a snap.

And the power designed into these kilns allows you to turn even the heaviest Cone 10 loads without wasting time stalling out on the high end. This ability to fi re and cool fast will increase production, save energy, and increase element life. Remember you can always program the kiln to fi re slower if needed.

Skutt KM KilnMaster Automatic Kilns

From the outside there doesn't seem to be anything different about the New Kiln Controller by Skutt. The keys are the same and the steps for entering a program have not changed; but on the inside…

Current Sensing – No more hiring expensive technicians to perform basic electrical tests. Every KilnMaster and GlassMaster Skutt Kiln is now equipped with a current sensor that allows remote technicians to troubleshoot your kiln right over the phone, The current sensor reads your voltage and amperage with just a few easy keystrokes accessed from the completely redesigned Menu function key. It can also check the board temperature, LED readout and a host of other useful troubleshooting data.

New Safety Features – Ever worry about a student or employee entering the wrong temperature or cone value and causing a meltdown in your kiln? You can now enter a maximum programmable temperature which makes it impossible. You can also program the kiln so it requires 2 key presses to start the program. This prevents accidental starts by curious passerbies.

Combine the Best of ConeFire Mode and Ramp and Hold Mode – If you have ever wanted to control the cooling on a ConeFire Program or have the controller do the Cone Correlation for you on a Ramp Hold Program your waiting is over. Through the use of new Menu Options this is not only possible but extremely easy.

These new controllers are now standard on every Skutt KilnMaster or GlassMaster Kiln. Upgrades for older models are easy to install and available now.

Skutt KilnSitter Manual Kilns

Reliable manual kilns

The Dawson KilnSitter has proven itself as a reliable way of controlling kilns for more than 50 years. The temperature and heating rate of KilnSitter (KS) Kilns are controlled by switches which you turn up in intervals which are determined by how fast or slow you wish to fire the kiln. The KilnSitter pyrometric cones to measure the heatwork inside the kiln. When the the pyrometric cone begins to melt the KilnSitter automatically shuts off the kiln.

A unique feature of the KilnSitter line of Skutt kilns is that most models can be expanded by inserting a 4.5" brick ring between the sections. This ring can be added or removed between firings as space requirements vary. An optional safety timer is also available to help prevent accidental overfires.

The Skutt Oval was designed with 3 main objectives in mind: make it powerful enough to handle heavy loads, make it durable enough to withstand the rigorous demands of high volume production and make it easy to operate and maintain.

Powerful - At 23,600 Watts the KM1627 Oval is one of the most powerful kilns on the market giving you the freedom to fire as fast or slow as you want to Cone 10 temperatures.

Durability - Due to their enormous spans oval kilns have a history of cracking lids and slabs. Skutt solved this problem by introducing the first fiber lid oval kiln with a fiber insert in the base. The electrical components and wiring are industrial quality to minimize downtime and boost performance.

Ease - The light fiber lid coupled with our innovative lid brace design make opening and closing the kiln a one handed operation. The touchpad has been moved higher for easy access to programming. Like all Skutt kilns the new ovals are sectional making them easy to move, repair and disassemble for loading large pieces. The entire kiln can be assembled and disassembled in less then 10 minutes using only a screwdriver. Our new busbar element connection design makes changing elements a breeze.

• Stack the sections around the pot.
• Re-attach the control boxes
• Place a lid on the top of the kiln.

Part of the New 22” Series, the KM1222-3 was designed to specifically meet the needs of the vertically challenged Potter or Teacher that needs a kiln short enough for them to easily load, yet large enough to meet the volume needs of a busy studio or classroom. At 22” deep it has a chamber that is 4.5” taller than its predecessor, the KM1218-3. This makes it possible to fire an 18” tall vase with all the proper clearances. It comes equipped with the precise control of the KilnMaster Controller making it easy and convenient to operate. Like all other Skutt !2 sided kilns, the spring-loaded Lid Lifter is included at no extra charge.

Porcelain doll makers love the KM-714 because it can handle the components of most dolls in one load, and because it gives them better firing control. For studios firing one or more of our larger KM-series kilns, the KM-714 makes the ideal test kiln, because they can replicate firing programs precisely, regardless of the size of the kiln. The KM-714 electric kiln operates universally on 208V or 240V current.

The KM-614-3 is the only electric kiln in the KM series that can be fired on common household 115C current using a special 30 Amp outlet. It is exceptionally handy for artists with limited space at home. The beginner can begin firing immediately - without a collection of pyrometer cones - and achieve consistently good results. Unlike many smaller kilns, it is a precision device suitable for serious jewelers and doll makers.

Great Cone 10 Test Kiln

This is a true Cone 10 Test Kiln.

Unlike most test kilns the GlazeTech is designed to run on 240V but still only requires a 20Amp breaker (208V models require a 30Amp breaker). This gives us the power we need to design a truly useful chamber size. It’s square design makes it perfect to fire test tiles on multiple levels and with it’s 9” depth you can actually test short cylinders to see how your glaze performs on a vertical surface.

The GlazeTech was originally developed at the request of Robin Hopper for his testing of the new Porcelain Canvas™ substrate offered through Ceramic Art Cart. With it’s 14” square chamber and 9” depth it is perfect for firing multiple levels of the Porcelain Canvas product.
